Arachnophilia 4.0
build 5278 (my copy came from Computer Shopper - June 2000 - CD #148 and is also available from "Tu Cows". I will continue to use this program) |
Requires IE4 or greater to fully functionality. It doesn't link with
Communicator to the same degree as IE - but it can open and update html
files within Navigator. FREEWARE (1.5MB download) and has the ability of
converting RTF documents to HTML for a quick start.
i.e. composed with MS Word or WordPad |

CoffeeCup HTML
Editor++ Pro 5.5 (30 day trial) This program has no appeal for me - at least not to spend money on it - and it is already removed from my computer. |
It can use and directly update Netscape within Communicator. Has built-in
Java functions ready for insertion into your pages.
The following came from the CoffeeCup help file:- Welcome to the CoffeeCup HMTL Editor++ Whatever you do......don't click the Cup ! http://www.coffeecup.com The CoffeeCup HTML Editor++ is a full-featured HTML editor. It includes Expresso FTP for uploading and downloading (in the registered version only), an image gallery (with quick-linking images), highlighted tags, style sheet help, automatic image sizing, a line reader, and tips. This program also comes with 30 background images, more than 175 animated GIFs and upwards of 140 Web icon graphics, 50 JavaScripts, a frame designer, an HTML stripper, and VBScripts with ActiveX functionality (5 unregistered, 10 registered). You can work on and test multiple pages at once. Other features include two different browser test icons for testing and surfing, an image previewing utility, a sound gallery, online help, project management features, support for HTML server extensions, a form designer, WebTV tag support, and special character insertion. CoffeeCup Style Sheet
Maker (30 day trial) As above |
Can be used as an extension to above. CC package 14.3MB style installed 3m7 |
|
EditPad 3.5.1
(I wouldn't leave home without it - "Postcardware" available direct - or from "Tu Cows" and it is also tucked away on the Computer Shopper - June and July CD's.) |
I have been using EditPad as my main text editor since 1997. It doesn't have the limitations of NotePad - you can open and search multiple files with its excellent search/replace facilities - open files are selected by tabs avoiding the shuffling between overlaping windows. Headers can be inserted when printing and it has case conversion. Under 300 KB download. |

HTML Kit 1.0
build 288 (my copy came from PC Plus - May 2000 - CD#163a. I will continue using this program - although I had no sucess in downloading the help file fron the program menu) |
Fully compliant with W3C HTML 4 - and can test existing pages for compliance (I have not tried this feature and suspect it will probably connect to external online validators). A comprehensive set of tags and attributes (properties) are built-in - which include Style Sheets and Frames. I was unable to select the default browser (which I assume is built-in) - but was able to link with netscape. FREEWARE (2.56MB download). My copy came from the May issue of PC Plus and requires help files to downloaded separately from www. |

Microsoft FrontPage
I dont have this installed on my own computer and as I have no confidence in Internet Explorer's security wont be installing it. |
wysiwyg
editor – has tabs allowing you to quickly to switch between – Normal (Screen
Edit) – HTML
- Preview – quite slick
to use - but caution is needed as it generates a lot of non-standard HTML
code and will limit your potental audience. This row of this table
was inserted using FrontPage - and the attempt to convert wysiwyg to capitals
resulted in inline Style code being inserted - rather than directly converting
the text! It also managed to change the typeface - although this could
be due to using a different computer.
If you are using IE then you will probably already have it installed - or have it on your W9x CD. |

NetObjects Fusion 2.0.2
I will be leaving this installed for the time being - and will return to it when I find some spare time. |
WYSIWYG editor - Whole site designer. A wacking big 44.5MB source expanding to 70MB installed! I was unable to import a copy of my site into this program by following the instructions included in the help file. I was able to produce a navigation map starting from scratch. This version is a couple of years old and is intended to whet your appitite and buy the latest version. |
|
Netscape Composer
part of Communicator This is my main editor and browser and I will continue using it as such - but now also in conjunction with the above two HTML editors . |
WYSIWYG editor - slow and clunky but intuitive to use - but does have some quirks - built-in HTML editor crude and ineffective. Recommend it is used with an external editor such as EditPad . |
|
SiteDesigner 2.0.7 -
Professional Edition (30 days extendable online to 60 days) This program has no appeal for me and it is already removed from my computer. |
WYSIWYG editor - not able to make much sense of its use for custom pages. There are a number of built in templates and if you want a site that looks like a lot of others then it has possibilities. There is a tutorial but its not included with the demo. Requires effort to learn - not recommended for occasional use. I tried using the built-in templates and found them garish. Selecting design a personal site - requested personal infomation that I would not want displayed by a web page. |
